Last day in this wonderful place. And worst of all...hangover. Ups!
We took our flight to El Calfate in the afternoon, and Esther said goodbye to Ushuaia and to her old boots, as she had to buy new ones for our future hikes.
BYE BYE END OF THE WORLD,

BYE BYE ESTHER'S BOOTS
LAKES, MOUNTAINS, CHANNELS, SNOW, NICE PEOPLE......We enjoyed this place a lot.

But now, we are heading towards one of the most amazing places in the world......THE PERITO MORENO GLACIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HERE WE GO!!!

Night for fun

Well,
after such a great cold day on a 4x4 car, it was time for enjoying the Ushuaia's night.
I told you before ("On Air") to remember the 3 girls from Cádiz: Leyre, Pupi and Ana.
We met them again in one of the remotest places in the World.
And obviously, we had to go out for some drinks....BAD idea!!!! Very fun, but dangerous.
Won't tell you anything else. Sorry...

4x4 In Ushuaia

Let's go for a ride!!

There are so many things to do here that it's hard to pick one. Today, second day in Ushuaia, our best option is 4x4 to Lago Fagnano y Lago Escondido. Everyones say they are beautiful, and why wouldn't we trust everyone????

Walter, our "chofer", pick's us up at the hostel. He is a REAL PATAGONIAN, the first one we meet, and he is very cool. Knows a lot about the history and nature of the area, AND HE CAN DRIVE AND DRINK MATE AT THE SAME TIME THROUGH MUDDY, NARROW ROADS!!!!!

We are 8 people on the car: -Javier & Javier; 2 mexicans (real fun)
- A braziliand couple (very nice people) - Walter "crazy driver" and his friend - Esther and me........THE BEST!!!

Beagle Canal

In 1832 Robert FitzRoy and Charles Darwin sailed this canal and explored this land. And I don´t think it has changed so much since then.
If you look on the opposite side of the town, the landscape must be exactly as Darwin saw it for the first time.

And if your imagination allowes you, think of some Yamanas around...this is more complicated.

We made it. We are in Ushuaia.
Trust me, you should go there.

Ushuaia means "bay overlooking the West". The indigenous people of this amazing place were the Onas and the Yamanas. Tribes that lived from fishing and hunting sea lions. They were NAKED, and kept "warm" with the sea lions´ fat and fur. IT´S FREEZING DOWN THERE!!!! The Europeans killed Ona´s when they put clothes on them; isn´t it ironic?? In 1902, this city became the terrorific destination for murderers, burglars and many other deliquents who were sent to the Ushuaia´s prison to serve their sentences. The prisoners worked on building the city. They had their own workshops of carpentry, clothes confection, bakery, and mandy other things to help inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego to survive in that inhospitable land. This institution worked until 1947, when the prison is closed and many Europeans and Argentinians moved to this end of the world to look for opportunities.

After the crazyness of the paperwork ended and I became officially argentinian, we went visitng the city.
My dad was our tour guide, and he did a very good job considering that Buenos Aires is not his "environment". We visited La Casa Rosada (the city hall); el barrio San Telmo; Avenida 9 de Julio (which people from Buenos Aires say is the widest avenue in the world....mmmm....maybe?), all the Cafés, restaurants, cars and people drinking Mate.
Not Bad, but to be honest, I COULDNT WAIT TO START OUR TRIP TO PATAGONIA! You can´t blame me for that.
One more night, and our ears would be freezing in Ushuaia. LET´S GO!!!!!!!!!!

LAND FAST!!!

Landing in Buenos Aires. Capital city.

AT LAST! We made it to Argentina. Now, we have to run.

Will have to explain this. I had an appointment (which I had booked 1 month in advance) with the Argentinian bureaucracy to obtain the ID document. This was absolutely necessary because without this ID I could not apply for the passport. I needed the passport to apply for the visa to go to New Zealand.....blablabla.
Anyway, I was 12 hours late and I had to run to have at least a chance to do all this.
My dad was waiting for me at the place where I had the appointment, waiting for me since 8am.....Esther and I arrived at 11am, on a taxi, with the backpacks and without showering or sleeping for the last 36 hours. NICE!!!!!!
BUT WE MADE IT!!! and now I´m officially Argentinian with all my documents. CHEERS!!!

And we are flying.

I think....mmm...no, I'm Sure that this flight is the best I've ever been at. As you can imagine, after 12 hours at Barajas Airport, we got to know some people. When we finally jumped on the plane, the sit numbers on our flight tickets were useless, so everyone sat wherever they wanted to. That was kind of fun, I must admit. So we ended up sitting at the back of the plain (like the bad guys on the bus) surrounded by: 3 argentinian guys on our left (Guillermo, Mauricio and Nestor), another one at the back (Gastón), and 3 girls from Cadiz in front of the argentinian guys (Ana, Pupi y Leire -Remember this 3 girls for future stories- We made good friends. We chatted, changed sits, drank some wine with dinner, some gin-tonics after diner, and Mate (typical argentinian "kind-of" tea) a few hours later. WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19 September 2006. The Odisey beggins.

Today is the day. Ester (my trip-mate) and I are supposed -and you will know soon why "supposed"- to leave today at 11am, with AIRMADRID. Ufffffffff!!!!!
Well. It was 8pm and we were still in Madrid, at the airport, and we didn't have a clue about WHEN THE HELL WE WERE LEAVING.
12 hours later (at 11pm) our flight took off. YIIIIIIIIIHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
